A Personal Vision to See Her Patients Smile
On a typical work day, Dr. Gopita Patel, an optometrist with Magruder Eye Institute, sees patients age 10 and up with a variety of vision needs at our Mills and Kissimmee locations. Her favorite part of her job is seeing the look on a patient’s faces when they can finally see clearly with newly-fitted corrective lenses.
Dr. Patel was born in London, England and moved to Florida as her parents pursued new opportunities. She completed her undergraduate studies in Biology at the University of Florida and obtained her doctoral degree at The New England College of Optometry 4 years later. After her first year studying in Boston, she decided to take a year off and joined Magruder Eye Institute as an ophthalmic technician and scribe.
Dr. Patel first gained interest in the field of optometry with her own personal vision problems at a young age. “I’ve worn glasses since I was five years old and I distinctly remember that moment when I put on my first pair of glasses,” she recalls. She had never realized how much clearer her vision could actually be and from that point on, realized she wanted to do what her optometrist did for a living.
In 2016, Dr. Patel completed her residency at the William V. Chappell Jr. VA Hospital in Daytona Beach. Her main focus was primary care with an emphasis on diagnosing and treating ocular diseases. She frequently performed comprehensive eye examinations and worked with a variety of specialists in the field of retina and cornea to gain as much experience as possible.
In August of 2016, Dr. Patel re-joined EyeCare Optical Orlando as a licensed optometrist. She currently sees patients with all levels of vision problems, but in some cases, life-threatening conditions can reveal their symptoms through a comprehensive eye exam. “I always want to take that extra time to ensure a proper exam,” says Dr. Patel. “I pay particular attention to abnormalities that might present themselves during the exam and make sure that we act quickly in some cases.
When not seeing patients, you can find Dr. Patel working on an art project or at the gym with her sister, a personal trainer.
